EU to boost efforts toward Armenia-Azerbaijan peace

The European Union plans to intensify its efforts to help Armenia and Azerbaijan reach a peace agreement, EU Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos said following her meeting with Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan in Brussels.

Kos emphasized Turkey’s regional importance: “Turkey is a key partner for stability in the South Caucasus, the Mediterranean, and Black Sea regions. Minister Hakan Fidan and I continue to discuss the positive agenda of EU–Turkey relations, and the EU will keep supporting the development of this cooperation.

We will intensify efforts to facilitate a peace agreement between Armenia and Azerbaijan,” Kos stated.

On August 8, a trilateral meeting was held at the White House with Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, U.S. President Donald Trump, and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev. A joint declaration was signed summarizing the results of the Washington talks. During the same event, Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan and Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov, in the presence of their leaders and the U.S. president, initialed the “Agreement on Peace and the Establishment of Interstate Relations between the Republic of Armenia and the Republic of Azerbaijan.”
