The second day of competition at the AIBA World Boxing Championships in Dubai proved successful for the Armenian national team, with three more athletes advancing past the opening round.
Tokyo Olympic bronze medalist, three-time European champion, and four-time World bronze medalist Hovhannes Bachkov (67 kg) secured an early victory over Kenya’s Wiseman Mivatae. The bout was stopped after Mivatae went down multiple times, prompting the referee to call the match in Bachkov’s favor, reports Factor.am.
In the same weight category, Armenia’s Armen Mashakaryan advanced automatically after his opponent failed to appear in the ring.
Artush Hovhannisyan (80 kg) also had a winning start, defeating Cameroon’s Ngona Brandone.
Earlier, on December 4, Ararat Harutyunyan (71 kg), Vakhtang Harutyunyan (75 kg), and Narek Manasyan (92 kg) had also secured victories, moving on to the next stage.
Armenia is represented by 14 boxers at the World Championships, which will run through December 13.
The tournament features 428 athletes from 108 countries competing in 13 weight categories. The record-breaking prize pool totals $8 million, with world champions receiving $300,000, silver medalists $150,000, bronze medalists $75,000, and fifth-place finishers $10,000.
