Tom Barrack, U.S. Ambassador to Turkey and Special Envoy on Syria, stated that a peace agreement between Azerbaijan and Armenia could create hope for the reopening of the Armenia–Turkey border, as reported by RFE/RL.
Barrack emphasized Turkey’s strategic role in the South Caucasus, saying it is vital for both Armenia and Azerbaijan.
“If we expand the corridor from the Caspian Sea to the Mediterranean, it will allow us to solve all regional energy issues,” he noted.
On August 8, at the White House, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, U.S. President Donald Trump, and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev signed a joint declaration summarizing the outcome of their meeting.
Also, Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan and Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov, in the presence of the three leaders, initialed the “Agreement on the Establishment of Peace and Interstate Relations between the Republic of Armenia and the Republic of Azerbaijan.”
