Levon Aronian, former captain of Armenia’s national chess team and now representing the United States, has won the Freestyle Chess Grand Slam Final — a rapid-format tournament based on Fischer Random chess.
In the decisive match, Aronian defeated former classical world champion and current FIDE top-ranked player Magnus Carlsen with a score of 1.5–0.5, Armenpress reports.
The tournament was held in South Africa and brought together some of the world’s top grandmasters in this innovative chess format.
