U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem announced on X that the United States will terminate the Green Card lottery program, formally known as the DV1 visa program.
Noem said the decision was made under President Donald Trump’s directive, following reports that the suspect in the Brown University shooting had entered the country through the Diversity Visa system.
She stated the move aims to ensure that American citizens "no longer suffer the consequences of this harmful program."
The shooting occurred on December 13 at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, killing two people and injuring nine. The suspect fled the scene but was later apprehended after a manhunt. He was released from custody a few days later.
