Arctic air to grip Armenia until January 8–9

Arctic air masses will dominate Armenia’s weather in the first ten days of January, with the coldest temperatures expected on January 3–4, according to Deputy Director of the Hydrometeorology and Monitoring Center Gagik Surenyan, as reported by Panorama.am .

Air temperatures will drop by 8–10 degrees Celsius across the country, with Shirak and Gegharkunik provinces expected to record the coldest nights, reaching –25 to –30°C. In Yerevan, nighttime lows between –15 and –17°C are forecast during the same period.

The Arctic cold front will persist through January 8–9.

Despite the intense early-month cold, the monthly average temperature for January is forecast to be 1–2°C above the climatic norm, with precipitation within normal ranges, resulting in a slightly warmer-than-usual January overall.

In the second and third ten-day periods, subtropical warm air masses from the southwest and south are expected to dominate, pushing temperatures above the climatic norm by 1–2°C compared to the colder start to the month.

Director of the Hydrometeorology and Monitoring Center Levon Azizyan noted that from January to November 2025, Armenia recorded an average temperature of 8.1°C, which is 1°C above normal, and precipitation totaled 422 mm, amounting to 81% of the norm.

He added that March 2025 ranked as the 6th warmest March since records began in 1935.
