Vicken Euljeckjian asks wife to postpone son’s wedding

Linda Euljeckjian, the wife of Lebanese-Armenian Vicken Euljeckjian, who is held captive in Azerbaijan, shared details with Pastinfo from a handwritten letter she received from her husband, allowing limited excerpts to be conveyed without publishing the letter itself.

“The message he sent made me cry. He asked that our son not get married and wait for him. Our son’s wedding is scheduled in two months,” Linda said, noting that the request came as a surprise to her.

In the letter, Euljeckjian wrote that he was especially glad to be able to send messages to his family during Christmas and New Year, and he highly appreciated the visit carried out by the Red Cross. He expressed his love and gratitude to all family members for their support and asked his wife to continue caring for his mother, who has been ill for a long time.

“I have only one request. If it is not too difficult, give me a little time so that I can participate in this wedding myself,” Vicken wrote.

Asked whether this meant that Vicken hoped he might be released, his wife said the request had surprised her: “To be honest, I am already desperate.”

She also reported that alongside the letter, Vicken managed to call the family, during which he said his health condition had slightly improved.

“A doctor was brought to see him. They said he has been unable to walk for a long time due to pain and a slipped spinal disc, but if he is given medication, his condition can improve. Although back pain still prevents him from walking, he has not yet been provided with a wheelchair, so he needs medication. For now, the Red Cross is able to bring him food and cigarettes,” she said.

Vicken Euljeckjian, who is held in a Baku prison and suffers from serious health problems, sent a handwritten letter to his wife Linda Euljeckjian. The existence of the letter was confirmed by the Armenian orphan relief organization SOAR, based in Buenos Aires.

The 46-year-old Euljeckjian is a citizen of Armenia and Lebanon. He was abducted by Azerbaijani armed forces in Artsakh on November 10, 2020, one day after the ceasefire between Armenia and Azerbaijan came into effect. In June 2021, a Baku military court sentenced him to 20 years in prison on charges of “mercenarism,” “terrorism,” and “illegal crossing of the Azerbaijani state border.” In recent months, reports have emerged about his deteriorating health.
