Mirzoyan, Rubio discuss Armenians held in Azerbaijan

Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan stated that during his meeting with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio in Washington, they discussed the issue of Armenians currently detained in Azerbaijan.

"Naturally, we addressed certain obstacles that currently do not align with the positive trends of peacebuilding and cooperation. The issue of individuals held in Azerbaijan is among those concerns," said Mirzoyan, as reported by Armenpress.

The two sides also discussed the dynamic advancement of the Armenia–U.S. strategic partnership, the implementation of agreed initiatives, joint projects, and future prospects.

Azerbaijani media report that prosecutors have demanded life imprisonment for former Nagorno-Karabakh President Arayik Harutyunyan, former Foreign Minister Davit Babayan, former Defense Army Commander Levon Mnatsakanyan, former Deputy Commander Davit Manukyan, and former Parliament Speaker Davit Ishkhanyan.

Additionally, prosecutors have requested 20-year sentences for former presidents Arkadi Ghukasyan and Bako Sahakyan, as well as for Madat Babayan and Melikset Pashayan. Other requested sentences include: Garik Martirosyan – 19 years, Davit Alaverdyan – 18 years, Levon Babayan – 17 years, and Vasili Beglaryan, Gurgen Stepanyan, Edik Ghazaryan – 16 years.
