Vagif Khachatryan, one of the Armenian prisoners recently returned from Baku, is currently receiving care at the Nork-Marash Medical Center in Yerevan. According to the hospital's director, Mikael Adamyan, Khachatryan is undergoing tests due to a mild exacerbation of a chronic illness.
“He’s had this condition for the past 15 years. As this is medical confidentiality, we won’t go into details, but he had been regularly monitored in Stepanakert. The problem was identified during previous check-ups,” Adamyan told reporters, as quoted by 1lurer.am .
Health Minister Anahit Avanesyan, who visited Khachatryan at the hospital, stated that he is currently undergoing further examination. Specialists will determine the next steps in his treatment based on the results.
“Right now, everything is stable. His condition is normal given his chronic illness. His spirits are high, he’s happy, and he told us, ‘I’m in Armenia and I’m doing well,’” Avanesyan said, according to RFE/RL.
In July 2023, Khachatryan was traveling from Artsakh to Armenia for urgent cardiac care when Azerbaijani authorities detained him. The 70-year-old was later transferred from prison to an intensive care unit in Baku due to a serious deterioration in his health.
Minister Avanesyan also noted that the overall condition of the four repatriated detainees from Baku is satisfactory.
In addition to Vagif Khachatryan, the other returnees are Davit Davtyan, Gevorg Sujyan, and Vicken Euljeckjian. According to Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, initial medical checks showed no health concerns for the other three, while Khachatryan’s state was assessed as stable.
