Former POW Gevorg Sujyan speaks out after release

On January 14, Gevorg Sujyan, founder of the "New Armenia Homeland-Diaspora" charitable NGO, who was recently released from Azerbaijani captivity, wrote on his Facebook page that he will not rest until all remaining captives are free.

"I have not abandoned you, brothers. I left my soul with you. As long as you remain in the cruel grip of captivity, I will not find peace. I swear it," Sujyan posted.

In an earlier post, he wrote: "Today I set foot on the sacred soil of my homeland, and this day is priceless to me. I cherish every moment and will hold it dear. I will fill my thoughts with boundless dreams, leaving no space for fear or doubt.

'Can't' is no longer part of my vocabulary. I will always strive for more, because to grow, I must first expand the boundaries of my mind. From now on, I will remind myself that unless my passion becomes obsession, my talents will never turn into glory. And unless my thirst to serve others exceeds my inner doubts, I will lose precious hours of being useful.

Today, I renew my devotion, to avoid false nobility and remain honest, humble, and sincere. I, a mere mortal, have set foot on this sacred land. There may be critics and ill-wishers who throw stones. I will respond with kindness and love, even if undeserved. Some will try to defame and condemn me; I will build beautiful monuments from the stones they cast. In response, I will smile with a wisdom that burns in my heart. And if they call me mad, I will smile again with the same wise smile because, people, it is the mad who turn the world forward. I am not afraid to be different. I will move ahead with confidence. This is my day," he concluded.

*Gevorg Sujyan and Davit Davtyan were captured on November 11, 2020, on the Berdzor-Shushi road while attempting to deliver humanitarian aid to Stepanakert. In 2021, they were sentenced to 15 years in prison by Azerbaijani authorities on fabricated espionage charges.

On January 14, 2025, Sujyan, Davtyan, Vicken Euljeckjian, and Vagif Khachatryan were handed over to Armenian authorities via the Hakari Bridge. Initial medical evaluations found no health issues for Sujyan, Davtyan, or Euljeckjian. Khachatryan is receiving care at Nork-Marash Medical Center.*
