Armenian president, ICRC head talk POWs and missing persons

On the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Armenian President Vahagn Khachaturyan met with Mirjana Spoljaric Egger, President of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC). The meeting focused on the issues of detainees, missing persons, and other individuals held in custody, along with broader humanitarian concerns.

President Khachaturyan emphasized the importance of Armenia’s close cooperation with the ICRC, highlighting the organization’s key role in upholding international humanitarian law, aiding affected populations, and addressing crisis situations.

He stated that securing the return of prisoners and clarifying the fate of the missing are of critical importance, stressing that humanitarian matters must be treated as top priorities.

The two also discussed the latest regional developments and the overall situation. Both sides agreed that peace and stability efforts must be addressed alongside humanitarian challenges.

President Khachaturyan commended the ICRC’s efforts both in Armenia and the wider region, underlining its long-standing humanitarian mission and vital role during conflicts.

According to Azerbaijani media, prosecutors are seeking life imprisonment for former Nagorno-Karabakh president Arayik Harutyunyan, former foreign minister Davit Babayan, former Defense Army commander Levon Mnatsakanyan, his former deputy Davit Manukyan, and ex-parliament speaker Davit Ishkhanyan.

Additionally, the prosecution seeks 20-year sentences for former Karabakh presidents Arkadi Ghukasyan and Bako Sahakyan, as well as Madat Babayan and Melikset Pashayan. Other requested sentences include Garik Martirosyan – 19 years, Davit Alaverdyan – 18 years, Levon Babayan – 17 years, and 16 years each for Vasil Beglaryan, Gurgen Stepanyan, and Edik Ghazaryan.
