Ritter: no border incidents since Washington talks

Markus Ritter, head of the European Union’s monitoring mission in Armenia, announced that no new incidents have been recorded along the Armenia-Azerbaijan border following the recent talks in Washington.

Speaking on Armenian Public TV, Ritter noted that while both sides fired shots into the air overnight, there were no targeted exchanges between border positions.

He emphasized that EU monitors help foster stability and reduce tensions in the region, this is the key result their presence can guarantee, according to Pastinfo.

“There were shootings in spring 2025 north of Goris and east of Sotk. We observed the incidents, and they have since stopped.

Major incidents also occurred in the summer of 2023 in Yeraskh, Sotk, and Nerkin Hand in 2024.

I’m proud these incidents have ceased along the border,” Ritter said.

He added that once a peace treaty is signed and ratified, the EU mission’s role may end. However, until then, they will continue visiting border communities, supported by mutual agreement with the parties.

Ritter stressed that the mission contributes to preserving regional stability and maintaining close contact with local communities near the border.
