Pashinyan prioritizes int’l legitimacy over army development

Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan stated that the Armenian government prioritized international legitimacy over military development, marking the 34th anniversary of the Armed Forces during a visit to the Ministry of Defense, according to 1lurer.am .

He stressed that without securing international legitimacy, reforms within the Armenian army would not have been feasible.

"With the agreements of October 6, 2022, we declared our intention to rely on the logic of international legitimacy and, secondly, to suspend our membership in the Collective Security Treaty Organization. Without these two decisions, dear attendees, we would not have had the opportunity, let alone the time, to carry out any military reforms.

In fact, I could go further and say we might not even have a state today. This is a reality we must clearly acknowledge. Moreover, no one should assume that the risk of losing our statehood emerged only after the 2018 revolution. There is a very specific date tied to that decision.

Carefully read the documents from January, July, and August of 2016. Examine the correspondence we have made public. It's critically important to record that we placed international legitimacy before the army to restructure its role in the national security framework. But we are not stopping there," he said.

In his remarks, the Prime Minister also addressed ongoing reforms in the defense sector, highlighting their importance in an evolving global context.
