Court extends detention of Karekin II’s brother by 2 months

The Armavir Regional Court has extended the detention of Gevorg Nersisyan, brother of Catholicos of All Armenians Karekin II, by another two months. This was announced by lawyer Ara Zohrabyan, according to Sputnik Armenia.

“It was a clearly unfounded decision and yet another tool of pressure. There's no other way to describe this. The main witness in the case gave testimony in court that differs from his pretrial statement. He said Gevorg Nersisyan never uttered a negative word or provoked any conflict. In other words, his testimony was entirely different,” Zohrabyan stated.

Zohrabyan emphasized that the same witness also told the court he did not file the initial report voluntarily but was pressured into doing so.

“Despite all this, Judge Gevorg Manukyan of the Armavir Regional Court tailored everything to justify extending the arrest of a 69-year-old retired man with health problems,” Zohrabyan said.

On November 3, the court decided to detain Gevorg Nersisyan and his son, Hambardzum Nersisyan, for one month. They are facing charges under Article 211, Part 2, Clause 5 of Armenia’s Criminal Code, relating to obstructing an election campaign by a group of individuals. According to investigators, they interfered with the Republic party’s campaign in the enlarged Vagharshapat community in 2025.
