UN debates ECOSOC reform under Armenian chairmanship

On January 27–28, Armenia’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Paruyr Hovhannisyan, chaired the 2026 coordination segment of the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) in his capacity as vice president. The sessions focused on enhancing the Council’s coherence, efficiency, and impact in the final phase of implementing the 2030 Agenda, according to Armenia’s UN mission.

Held during ECOSOC’s 80th anniversary year, the discussions reaffirmed the shared understanding that coordination is now a benchmark for collective credibility and effectiveness.

Participants explored how ECOSOC can better align peace, development, human rights, and humanitarian action, translating global commitments into tangible support for member states. The debates also addressed strengthening coherence, predictability, and accountability ahead of the 2030 Agenda’s final stage.

The core message emphasized that ECOSOC’s strengthening is achievable through clearer political guidance, more effective oversight, inclusive stakeholder participation, and a stronger focus on results and real-world impact.
