National Assembly Speaker Alen Simonyan will meet Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov during his February 5–6 official visit to Russia, in addition to holding talks with Federation Council Speaker Valentina Matviyenko.
“The visit is at the invitation of Ms. Matviyenko. A meeting with her is planned, as well as with Russia’s foreign minister,” Simonyan said, as reported by Factor.am .
He added that other meetings may also take place.
“During our phone call, we discussed documents that remain unsigned and unratified. You may recall that when Ms. Matviyenko was here, a forum was held during which several agreements were signed between Russian regions and Armenian provinces. These agreements still need to be ratified. That will be one of the topics of discussion, along with broader issues in Armenian-Russian relations. We’re also preparing to hold Armenian Culture Days in Russia, and we’ll be discussing the timing of that event,” he said.
Simonyan also responded to a question on whether he might raise the issue of Russia’s alleged hybrid attacks against Armenia, which he has previously addressed publicly.
“I think there’s no doubt, at least not in our team, that if we raise an issue publicly, it means we’re ready to discuss it. When Ms. Matviyenko was here, of course, I brought it up. I also shared our concerns during my meeting with the ambassador. The ambassador was summoned to the foreign ministry and was fully informed. If there is cause or need to bring it up again, I don’t think anyone doubts that we will. We speak up openly, whether on air, or from the National Assembly podium,” Simonyan said.
Valentina Matviyenko visited Armenia in June 2025. Together with Alen Simonyan, she co-chaired the 39th session of the interparliamentary commission for cooperation between the Federal Assembly of Russia and Armenia’s National Assembly.
