A modular design has been selected for Armenia’s future nuclear power plant, but the government has not yet chosen the specific reactor model, Territorial Administration and Infrastructure Minister Davit Khudatyan announced.
According to Khudatyan, this key strategic decision has been made, but the exact technology provider remains undecided, 1lurer.am reported.
“We’re still evaluating proposals, including from Russia, the U.S., China, South Korea, and France. No final decision has been made yet. We expect to choose the model in 2026 or 2027. There's no urgent need to rush this process,” the minister said.
He added that the choice of model will also determine the partner country. Since modular nuclear systems are not widely implemented yet, the government is conducting further research.
Khudatyan also addressed the extension of the current nuclear power plant’s operation. He said the first phase of the extension project is progressing well, and the second phase should allow the plant to operate for another decade.
He emphasized that relevant contracts are already in place and all activities are proceeding on schedule.
“We are consistently working toward extending operations, and we’re confident the extension will succeed, ensuring the plant stays connected to our energy grid for at least 10 more years,” he added.
In September 2025, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan attended the World Nuclear Week summit in Moscow.
"Nuclear energy is also vital for our country. As you rightly pointed out, we closely cooperate with the Russian Federation and are working to extend our nuclear plant’s life through 2036. We’re now looking into suitable modular nuclear projects for Armenia and maintaining an active dialogue with Russia on the matter," Pashinyan said.
