MP says free speech criminalized in Armenia

During a protest in front of the National Assembly, MP Garnik Danielyan declared that “free speech is now criminalized in Armenia.”

“Those who oppose this government end up imprisoned. The international community must clearly assess this situation. It’s crucial to remember all those who are currently being unlawfully detained,” he said, emphasizing that such a state of affairs is unacceptable, Aysor.am reports.

He stressed the need for international organizations to condemn what is happening and to stop pretending they are unaware of the situation in Armenia. The MP added that applying double standards is unacceptable.

Danielyan also stated: “You cannot give awards to a dictator who continues to hold our compatriots captive.”

A group of citizens, clergy, and MPs held a demonstration outside the National Assembly in support of “political prisoners and Armenian captives held in Baku prisons,” addressing their message to Michael O’Flaherty, the Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights, who is currently in Armenia.
