Parliament committee rejects bill on political prisoners

A National Assembly committee issued a negative conclusion on a legislative proposal submitted by the opposition that aimed to formally acknowledge the presence of political prisoners in Armenia.

“There are political prisoners in Armenia. They meet the criteria defined by PACE Resolution 1900 of 2012. This is a serious issue for our state,” said MP Elinar Vardanyan of the opposition Hayastan faction, who presented the bill, Auroranews.am reports.

During the session, the committee’s co-rapporteur, Vladimir Vardanyan, Chair of the Standing Committee on State and Legal Affairs, stated that no such assessments have been made in official documents of European parliamentary institutions concerning Armenia.
