The Armenian National Assembly is reviewing proposed amendments to the Law “On Trade and Services,” which would ban the sale or availability of single-use plastic and styrofoam products across the country starting January 1, 2027.
According to Deputy Minister of Environment Ara Mkrtchyan, the ban aligns with the government’s strategic environmental priorities, which include the gradual reduction and eventual elimination of single-use polyethylene products.
The bill would prohibit, as of 2027, the use or sale of plastic bags, packaging, and disposable tableware in shops, public food outlets, mobile retail points, markets (such as vernissages), trade fairs, and open-air trading locations.
Exceptions will apply to bags made from recycled materials specifically for waste, as well as plastic containers with lids used for weighing and packaging.
Violations will result in a warning for the first offense, and fines between 100,000 and 150,000 AMD for repeat violations.
