Armenia to introduce biometric system in autumn

Interior Minister Arpine Sargsyan has announced that a biometric system will be introduced in Armenia in the autumn of this year.

According to her, the cost of biometric passports and identification cards is in the final stage of determination and will soon be made public, Radar Armenia reported.

“At this stage, we are working on finalizing the design of the biometric passports. Their specifications will be presented to the public in the near future,” the minister said.

At the same time, she emphasized that old-style passports will not cease to operate and will remain valid until their expiration date, while the decision to obtain new documents will be left to citizens’ discretion.

She also noted that various mechanisms have been discussed to motivate citizens to apply more actively for biometric passports.
