National Assembly deputy from the Hayastaн faction and Dashnaktsutyun member Kristine Vardanyan said a situation has emerged in Armenia where preserving Armenian identity has become a central issue.
“We have reached a point where in Armenia we are speaking about the need to preserve Armenian identity. This is the defining feature of the upcoming parliamentary elections,” she said, according to Panorama.am .
According to Vardanyan, a clear dividing line has formed in the country: on one side are those who, in her words, have fought against identity, and on the other are those who, despite differences, stand as carriers and defenders of that identity.
“In Armenia we are thinking about how to confront the campaign against Armenian identity, how to preserve it. That is why the Church is also becoming a target. In the near future we will see an intensification of this campaign. Until June 7, we will witness such actions, perhaps with changing tools,” the MP said, adding that the ruling Civil Contract party could interpret votes received in the elections as an indulgence for actions against the Catholicos.
She also referred to events in Vagharshapat, noting that Civil Contract presented its candidate’s victory as a green light for steps against the Church.
“It has already been announced that in March we will have a draft Constitution demanded by Aliyev. Dear people, I know none of you wants Aliyev’s Constitution, but your vote for Civil Contract will be interpreted that way, and your non-participation in elections will be interpreted as agreement with the results. On June 7, we will face a choice: to support or reject Aliyev’s Constitution, to agree with the campaign against identity or to reject it,” Vardanyan said, emphasizing the need for cooperation among opposition forces on this issue.
Parliamentary elections in Armenia are scheduled for June 7, 2026.
