Yerevan, Nairobi launch political consultations

Representatives of the foreign ministries of Armenia and Kenya have formally launched political consultations and discussed avenues for expanding cooperation.

On February 23, Armenian Deputy Foreign Minister Vahan Kostanyan and Director General for Political and Diplomatic Affairs at Kenya’s Ministry of Foreign and Diaspora Affairs Josphat Maikara signed a memorandum of understanding on holding political consultations between the two countries’ foreign ministries.

Following the signing ceremony, the first round of political consultations between the Armenian and Kenyan foreign ministries was held, co-chaired by Head of the Middle East and Africa Department of Armenia’s Foreign Ministry Levon Petrosyan and Director General Josphat Maikara.

During the discussions, the sides addressed opportunities to promote cooperation in education, healthcare, high technologies, agriculture and other fields. Both sides underscored the importance of strengthening political dialogue and expanding the legal and contractual framework. They also touched upon cooperation and mutual support on international platforms.

The Kenyan side was presented with Armenia’s priorities ahead of the 17th meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP17) to the UN Convention on Biological Diversity, scheduled to take place in Yerevan in 2026.

The meeting also covered recent developments in the South Caucasus and East Africa, as well as other issues on the international agenda of mutual interest.

Recently, Armenia’s Foreign Ministry has intensified contacts with African countries. A similar memorandum has also been signed with Zimbabwe.
