Armenia to borrow €70 mln for water system upgrade

To ensure improved water supply, the government intends to secure a €70 million loan. The draft agreement was presented at a parliamentary committee session by Water Committee Chairman Aramazd Ghalamkaryan.

According to him, the agreement is between Armenia and the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development for the implementation of the first phase of the Armenia Water and Irrigation Services Improvement Program, Aysor.am reports.

The program aims at modernization and systemic reforms in the irrigation, water supply and drainage sectors.

“I consider it important to note that the program will also be co-financed by the French Development Agency in the amount of another €70 million and by the Government of Armenia through taxes, duties and other payments.

The program is multi-phase and is planned for five years. If successfully implemented, there will also be a second phase. In monetary terms, the first phase will amount to $185 million, and the second to $250 million. The agreement has received approval and a positive opinion from the Constitutional Court,” he said.

Earlier, Veolia Water clarified on its website that from May 1 to September 16 water supply at a number of addresses in Yerevan and the regions would operate on a 17-hour schedule — from 7:00 a.m. to midnight — citing a sharp increase in new consumers and the need to prevent nighttime water losses.

Later, it was announced that following government intervention, no changes would take place in the water supply schedule.
