Russia, Armenia discuss key railway projects

Issues related to the restoration and construction of railway infrastructure toward the Gyumri–Akhurik–Turkey border and the Yerask–Nakhichevan line were discussed with the Russian side.

Deputy Minister of Territorial Administration Armen Simonian received a delegation led by Russian Deputy Transport Minister Dmitry Zverev.

The parties also addressed the current level of cooperation in road transport and air transportation.

Earlier, Armenia’s Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, commenting on the railway issue, stated that in his view the solution would be for a third country maintaining warm relations with both Armenia and Russia to purchase from Russia the concessionary management rights of the railway. As possible buyers, he mentioned Kazakhstan, the United Arab Emirates and Qatar.

“My envisioned solution is that a country maintaining friendly relations with both Russia and Armenia would simply buy the concessionary management right from Russia. For example, Kazakhstan, the UAE, Qatar or any other country that enjoys equally warm relations with both the Russian Federation and Armenia,” Nikol Pashinyan said.
