Mer Dzevov movement and the initiative of Prosperous Armenia party leader Gagik Tsarukyan will compete to become the leading opposition force, National Assembly Speaker Alen Simonyan said in a conversation with journalists.
He also stated that a large share of citizens who voted for the Hayastan alliance in 2021 will no longer vote for Armenia’s second president, Robert Kocharyan, Aysor.am reports.
According to Simonian, Kocharyan must first be able to lead the Hayastan parliamentary faction, which, in his view, he has failed to do. He assessed that it is evident the faction is not managed by Kocharyan, that the Armenian Revolutionary Federation has gained real influence there, and that the others are merely satellites.
“Of all people, Kocharyan should not speak about leadership. He has something else to worry about — whether he will cross the threshold in the next parliamentary elections and enter parliament, or whether his entire opposition resource will be taken by other parties. According to my information, he has that problem. The lion’s share of those citizens will give their votes to another opposition party. Robert Kocharyan knows this very well,” Simonyan said.
He also said that he is confident two or three opposition forces could surpass the electoral threshold.
“The campaign will show that. I think it will be either the Mer Dzevov option or Tsarukyan’s. The two of them will compete to become the leading opposition force,” he said.
Parliamentary elections in Armenia are scheduled for June 7, 2026.
