Interior Ministry denies mass drug abuse in schools

Claims of widespread drug use among schoolchildren are unfounded, Interior Ministry spokesperson Narek Sargsyan wrote on his Facebook page.

“Another post titled ‘Drugs have already reached schoolchildren’ has circulated on one of the websites. The site, in turn, reposted it from a social media user who referred to illegal drug trafficking in their publication.

In line with the policy adopted by the Interior Ministry, in each such case we contact the author and request specific data to ensure further action based on facts.

We also contacted the author of the mentioned publication, but as in all other cases, the social media user did not file a report and did not provide information about which school was being referred to or any other details.

You may recall the significant uproar last year over the incident at the Mkchyan school, where it was claimed that ‘a student’s nose was smeared with drugs,’ and so on.

A criminal proceeding was initiated, forensic examinations were conducted and no presence of narcotics was recorded. However, the same intensity and scale of discussion did not follow the refuted claim,” the statement reads.

The Interior Ministry spokesperson urged the public to refrain from spreading unverified and unfounded information.

According to statistical data, six cases of illegal drug circulation involving minors were recorded in 2025, compared with seven cases in 2024.

At present, seven minors are registered at the National Center for Addiction Treatment on the grounds of drug use.
