Armenia’s Ministry of Defense has denied circulating reports about gunfire and explosion sounds in the country’s south. The statement was made on Facebook by Defense Minister’s press secretary Aram Torosyan.
“No gunfire or explosions have been recorded or are occurring on the territory of Armenia. Certain sources are circulating articles with manipulative headlines aimed at creating unnecessary tension among the public,” he wrote.
Kapan Mayor Gevorg Parsyan said that the sounds of gunfire heard in the city originated from Iranian territory, Sputnik Armenia reported.
“There is no gunfire in Kapan or along our borders. Today, those sounds were heard from the territory of the Islamic Republic of Iran. They were audible today. They sounded more like artillery and bomb explosions,” Parsyan said.
Asked whether the sounds came from the direction of Kovsakan, the mayor said he had no information about that, clarifying only that they came from the Iranian side. According to Parsyan, residents of the Meghri region had heard similar sounds earlier.
The mayor also assured that gunfire or bombardment sounds are not being heard at present, noting that earlier they were audible during the daytime and toward the evening.
Earlier, media outlets reported that sounds of gunfire and artillery fire were being heard in Kapan.
