A missile strike on Tehran’s Armenian Majidiyeh district injured an Armenian child, said Movses Keshishian, editor-in-chief of the Tehran-based Armenian newspaper Arax.
“The Armenian Majidiyeh district of Tehran was hit. Windows of the Armenian union building nearby were shattered, but no Armenians suffered serious injuries. According to reports, 20 people were killed after the strike; none of them were Armenians, though a small Armenian child was injured,” Keshishian said, according to Factor.am.
He added that attacks had also taken place near Armenian neighborhoods in other Iranian cities, but there were no fatalities or additional injuries among Armenians.
Asked why the Armenian district in Tehran had been targeted, Keshishian said: “They are targeting not only military facilities but also police stations, and there was a police station in that area. In the other places that were also near Armenian neighborhoods, the strikes targeted police stations.”
According to him, although the country is in a wartime situation, daily life continues.
“People go to their shops, do their small jobs, stores remain open, and life continues normally. At the same time, large factories are closed, and places where people gather in large numbers, such as sports halls, are shut down to avoid creating danger,” he said.
On March 9, Mojtaba Khamenei was appointed Iran’s Supreme Leader, replacing the slain Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. According to Keshishyan, the appointment was seen as a routine matter for many people, who now expect changes.
“People expect changes in their lives. I think that if the first concern today is the war and its resolution, then the second and main task of the new leader will be addressing people’s difficulties and guiding the government so that those issues are resolved. That will remain for after the war,” he added.
Armenia’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Ani Badalyan said there were no reports of Armenian citizens being killed or injured, according to Radar Armenia.
Earlier it was reported that a residential building in Tehran’s historic Armenian Majidiyeh district had been struck by a missile during U.S. and Israeli military operations against Iran. Majidiyeh is considered one of Tehran’s oldest Armenian neighborhoods and has long been known for its lively community and developed infrastructure shaped by the Iranian-Armenian population.
