Metsola says Europe sees Armenia as friend

Europe sees a friend in Armenia, European Parliament President Roberta Metsola said during a joint press conference in Strasbourg with Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan.

She added that the European Parliament and Armenia’s National Assembly will continue to play a leading role in bringing Armenia closer to the European Union, Armenpress reported.

“When Europe looks at Armenia, it sees a friend. I hope that when Armenia looks at Europe, it sees a partner and an ally,” Metsola said.

She stressed that significant progress in relations between Armenia and the European Union has been recorded under the leadership of Nikol Pashinyan since the previous summit of the European Political Community. According to her, the EU and Armenia have agreed on a new strategic agenda.

Metsola said this step will help advance democratic reforms in Armenia, strengthen the country’s economic resilience, promote the rule of law and deepen bilateral cooperation in the field of security.

The European Parliament has also welcomed the presentation of a visa liberalization action plan to Armenia.

“All this contributes to our common goal of strengthening cooperation in various areas across Europe. I am confident that our parliaments will continue to play a leading role in bringing Armenia closer to our union,” the European Parliament president said.

Metsola also noted that she is looking forward to continuing discussions next week within the framework of the EU–Armenia Parliamentary Partnership Committee meeting.

She added that she is also anticipating the European Political Community summit scheduled to take place in early May in Yerevan and confirmed that she will be in the Armenian capital to participate.

Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said it was a great honor for him to be in the “house of democracy,” according to 1lurer.am .

“From time to time, we feel the need to return to the house of democracy to compare the clock of our democratic reforms with the clocks of the house of democracy — to ensure that our democratic reforms are moving along the right path, at the right speed and in the right direction.

It is a great honor for us that we have the support of the European Union and the European Parliament on our path of democratic reforms,” the prime minister said.

Pashinyan recalled that in 2025 the Armenian National Assembly adopted a law launching the process of Armenia’s accession to the European Union, which he said opened a new historical stage in Armenia–EU relations.

“That is a new stimulus for us to continue the course of democratic reforms,” he said.

The prime minister also noted that Armenia and the EU had earlier agreed on a new strategic agenda that raises relations to a new level. According to him, Armenia is also actively negotiating on visa liberalization.

Pashinyan added that Armenia has also received support through the European Peace Facility, while the EU civilian monitoring mission continues operating in the country.

“In general, a high-level political dialogue continues — at the level of the executive branch, the legislative branch and civil society,” he said, emphasizing that economic cooperation also has a broad agenda.

On December 2, 2025, following the sixth meeting of the Armenia–EU Partnership Council in Brussels, Armenia and the European Union signed the Partnership Strategic Agenda. The document was signed by Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan and the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas.
