Defense minister says opposition stance may lead to war

Statements by the main part of the opposition imply territorial claims against neighboring countries, which increases the risk of war, Armenia’s Defense Minister Suren Papikyan said.

He stressed that opposition figures speak about the need to continue the Karabakh movement, while Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan has stated that it should not be continued, Aysor.am reports.

“Their militaristic stance will lead to war,” the minister emphasized.

Papikyan also noted that the Defense Ministry continues to carry out its functions, assessing all possible risks.

“There is peace in Armenia,” Papikyan stressed.

At a briefing on March 19, Pashinyan said that some political forces advocate revising the peace agenda, which, according to him, could lead to inevitable war shortly after elections, most likely in autumn — “a new September war with severe consequences.” He had earlier stated that the Karabakh movement should not be continued.
