European Council President Antonio Costa said Brussels expects deeper Armenia–EU relations, in a post on X.
He referred to the first Armenia–European Union summit to be held in Yerevan on May 4–5, where he and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen will represent the EU.
“I look forward to meeting Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan. Armenia is a close partner of the European Union, and we expect these relations to deepen. Armenia and the EU are united by shared values and a commitment to international law and a rules-based international order,” Costa wrote.
Ahead of the summit, Costa and von der Leyen will attend a meeting of the European Political Community, scheduled for May 4, 2026, in Yerevan.
The Armenia–EU summit will focus on strengthening bilateral relations, particularly in the fields of energy, transport, and digital technologies. Leaders will also discuss progress in ensuring peace, security, connectivity, and prosperity in the South Caucasus, as well as ongoing global challenges, including recent developments in the Middle East and Ukraine.
Relations between Armenia and the EU are based on the Comprehensive and Enhanced Partnership Agreement (CEPA), in force since 2021, and the Armenia–EU Partnership Strategic Agenda adopted in December 2025 with the participation of Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan, EU High Representative Kaja Kallas, and EU Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos.
