An Armenian has been killed in Iran as a result of missile strikes carried out against the country by the U.S. and Israel. The news was reported by Aram Shahnazarian, editor-in-chief of the Iran-based Alik daily, according to Sputnik Armenia.
“On March 26, during heavy bombardment of the city of Isfahan, Hovhannes Simonyan, a resident of New Julfa, was killed in his office,” Shahnazarian said.
More than 20 people were killed as a result of the strikes.
At this stage, it is difficult to determine whether the Armenian cultural heritage of New Julfa has been affected.
“The city of Isfahan is home to the Holy Savior Cathedral and other Armenian churches. Even old school buildings, historic houses, the prelacy building, the library, and the Matenadaran are considered cultural heritage. If any of them had been damaged, Iranian media would have immediately reported it. It can be assumed they have not been harmed,” Shahnazaryan noted.
He added that the victim was an Iranian citizen, though details about his age and profession are not yet known.
On February 28, Israel and the U.S. carried out airstrikes on Iran, killing Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Iran responded by launching strikes toward Israel and Persian Gulf countries hosting U.S. military bases.
