Freed captive Euljeckjian faces serious health issues

Vicken Euljeckjian, who was released from Azerbaijani captivity and holds Armenian and Lebanese citizenship, has recently experienced a deterioration in his health and is scheduled to undergo heart catheterization on March 30, his wife Linda Euljeckjian told Sputnik Armenia.

According to her, he suffers from serious health issues, including high blood pressure, heart disease, and bone pain.

“After the procedure, he is expected to be hospitalized to treat his bone-related problems. He has difficulty moving and walks with the help of crutches. Calcium deposits are causing severe pain,” Linda said.

She noted that initially, after his return from captivity, only elevated blood pressure had been observed and his overall condition did not seem so severe, but over time his health significantly worsened.

Doctors explained that symptoms that did not appear at first may emerge later due to the effects of severe stress.

Reflecting on his time in captivity, Linda said it is impossible to describe it without pain.

“What he went through could push anyone into depression—physical, emotional, and psychological torture… It is heartbreaking. Despite all this, he remains strong, smiles, and tries to support us,” she said.

She also emphasized that the family is doing everything possible to support him, trying not to show their own pain. His daughter is expected to visit him in the near future.

On January 14, 2026, Azerbaijan handed over four Armenian captives to Armenia, including Vicken Euljeckjian_. A Lebanese Armenian, he was captured in Shushi in November 2020 and sentenced in Baku to 20 years in prison.
