Court upholds acquittal of protest participant

Armenia’s Court of Cassation issued a final ruling leaving unchanged the acquittal of Sergey Arakelyan, who took part in a protest linked to the Sacred Struggle movement, lawyer Vahe Yepremyan said on Facebook.

“The Court of Cassation rejected the prosecutor’s appeal and upheld the acquittal of my client Sergey Arakelyan, who had been cleared under Article 297(2)(1) of the Criminal Code (hooliganism committed by a group of persons). He was a participant in a civic action on Sargavak Street during the days of the ‘Sacred Movement.’

This politically motivated prosecution has also failed. The proceedings concluded with a victory for the defense, confirmed at all judicial levels,” the post reads.

According to the Investigative Committee, participants and leaders of the movement called Sacred Struggle had allegedly planned to carry out terrorist acts and actions aimed at seizing power in Armenia.
