Environment Minister Hambardzum Matevosyan said that the recent weather pattern once again demonstrates how rapidly and intensely climate processes can manifest in the region.
“Almost a month’s precipitation—in just one day. As previously forecast by the Hydrometeorology and Monitoring Center, since March 27 our country has been under the influence of an active cyclone entering from the south.
Its most intense phase was recorded on March 27–28, but precipitation continued in the following days, covering nearly the entire territory of the country.
The nature of precipitation varied depending on altitude: in mountainous areas, mainly snow and sleet fell, while in foothill and valley zones it was mostly rain. In several locations, the precipitation was quite intense.
The highest figures were recorded in Syunik Province. On March 27, Kapan received 47 mm of precipitation in a single day, which is about 75 percent of the monthly norm for March—almost a full month’s rainfall in one day. In other settlements of the region, 15–32 mm were recorded on the same day.
Overall, between March 27 and 30, precipitation across different regions ranged from 15 to 25 mm, reaching up to 49 mm in Syunik.
In Yerevan, 19–22 mm of precipitation was recorded. Notably, on the morning of March 30, within just one hour (07:30–08:30), 8–9 mm of rain fell in the capital, which is considered heavy rainfall,” the statement said.
