Lithuania backs Armenia-Azerbaijan peace efforts

Lithuanian Prime Minister Inga Ruginienė wrote on X after meeting Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev that her country supports efforts to achieve peace between Azerbaijan and Armenia.

“Lithuania firmly supports efforts to achieve lasting peace between Azerbaijan and Armenia, welcomes the progress made, and supports the continuation of stability in the region,” she wrote.

She added that Lithuania also supports deepening relations between the European Union and Azerbaijan.

During the meeting, Aliyev stated that Azerbaijan had taken the initiative to promote peace and bilateral trade relations in the region, APA reports.

He also said that “around 30,000 internally displaced persons have returned to their ancestral lands.” He added that since the 44-day war, more than 400 people have been killed or injured due to landmine explosions.

On August 8, during a trilateral meeting at the White House attended by Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, U.S. President Donald Trump, and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, a joint declaration was signed summarizing the outcomes of the talks.

Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan and Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov, in the presence of the leaders of Armenia, Azerbaijan, and the United States, initialed the agreement “On the Establishment of Peace and Interstate Relations between the Republic of Armenia and the Republic of Azerbaijan.”
