Аghasyan awarded European bronze posthumously

Former Armenian national team weightlifter Aghasi Aghasyan has been posthumously awarded bronze medals following a revision of European Championship results.

He was awarded bronze in the snatch and total at the 2014 European Championship in Tel Aviv, Israel, according to the Armenian Weightlifting Federation.

The decision followed disqualifications imposed in 2019 by the European Weightlifting Federation, which stripped medals from athletes competing in the 85 kg category.

The ceremony took place during the federation’s congress in Batumi, Georgia.

Samvel Gasparyan, Secretary General of the Armenian Weightlifting Federation, received the medals, which will soon be handed over to the athlete’s family.

Aghasyan died in 2019 as a result of a car accident.

He was a World University Games champion and a European junior champion, and retired from professional sport in 2017.
