Avinyan rejects corruption claims over Hrazdan Gorge project

Head of the Financial Department of Yerevan Municipality Kristine Avetisyan announced that 172.6 million drams will be allocated to build a multifunctional recreational zone along a 5.5 km section of the Hrazdan Gorge adjacent to Athens Street in the Arabkir district.

Mayor Tigran Avinyan added that the project was developed with the involvement of the Asian Development Bank, Panorama.am reports.

“You constantly implement projects under urgent procedures. Last year, you gave $2.5 million to LilianArm. Every year, New Year events are organized urgently, without a tender. Mr. Avinyan, this has become systemic for you—you know the ANIF case before, your COVID-related issues. Corruption suspicions are not fading. Elections are approaching—are you ready to face criminal responsibility if you do not lose the elections? What calculations have you made if you continue such questionable practices?” asked Pedro Zarokian, a member of the National Progress faction.

Avinyan responded that such claims are unfounded, describing them as “empty theories.”

Zarokian, in turn, expressed confusion, noting that it is unclear why the ANIF issue is being presented as an “empty theory.”

The project envisages the creation of a recreational area with spaces for sports activities, a café area, and an open-air cinema, as well as improvements to transport and pedestrian infrastructure.
