Opposition leader warns against forgetting history

Prosperous Armenia Party leader Gagik Tsarukyan said it was unimaginable that a time would come when authorities would “be afraid to look at Mount Ararat or speak about the Genocide and Artsakh,” speaking at a conference titled “111 Years of Relevance: The Armenian Genocide and the Changing Region,” Panorama.am reports.

“This does not bring us honor,” he said.

Tsarukyan emphasized that every country has its own history and identity, adding that the richer the history, the stronger the state.

He also noted that his maternal grandparents came from Western Armenia, from Alashkert, later settling in Armenia and starting a family.

“We cannot forget our history; it does not honor us. Any complex issue requires such meetings and discussions,” the politician said.

He also described as unacceptable approaches aimed at pushing the issue of Artsakh into oblivion.

“How can we forget? Today Armenian cultural heritage is being destroyed there—that is an evil,” he added.

The Prosperous Armenia Party has submitted its nomination documents to the Central Electoral Commission. Party leader Gagik Tsarukyan heads the electoral list for the parliamentary elections scheduled for June 7.
