Olympic bronze medalist and two-time world champion Malkhas Amoyan has become a five-time European champion, winning gold at the championship held in Tirana.
In the 77 kg final at the European Wrestling Championships in Albania’s capital Tirana, he defeated Georgia’s Ramaz Zoidze, Radar Armenia reports.
The Armenian athlete began his campaign from the round of 16, where he beat Sweden’s Karl Baff 4–0. In the quarterfinals, Amoyan secured a dominant 10–0 victory over Ukraine’s Irfan Mirzoev, and in the semifinals, he defeated Moldova’s Alexandrin Gutu.
Another medal for Armenia’s national team was secured by 67 kg wrestler Karen Aslanyan, who won bronze. In the decisive bout, he claimed an early 11–0 victory over Poland’s Mairbek Salimov.
Manvel Khachatryan (55 kg) also came close to a bronze medal, but lost 1–3 to a representative of Bulgaria in the medal bout.
Earlier, Suren Aghajanyan, competing in the 60 kg category and making his senior European Championship debut, reached the final. The U23 gold medalist defeated three-time European champion Nihat Mammadli of Azerbaijan convincingly before time expired in the semifinals and advanced to the final, where he will face Serbia’s Georgi Tibilov for gold.
