Remembering the past and honoring the victims of the Armenian Genocide, Armenia is building its sovereign future on a peace agenda, the Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
It noted that in the 21st century, the world continues to witness racial and ethnic intolerance, hatred, and mass atrocities committed on that basis.
“On April 24, we commemorate and pay tribute to the victims of the Armenian Genocide carried out in the Ottoman Empire.
The Great Crime claimed the lives of 1.5 million men, women, children and elderly people who were killed or put to death solely for being Armenian.
This crime against the Armenian people became one of the historical precedents that led to the adoption in 1948 of the UN Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide.
Despite the efforts of the international community, in the 21st century we continue to witness manifestations of racial and ethnic intolerance, hatred and new mass atrocities based on them.
Armenia feels obliged to remain consistently engaged in identifying early warning signs of such crimes, supporting initiatives aimed at their prevention and elimination.
Through Armenia’s efforts, December 9, 2015, was included in the UN’s list of international days as the International Day of Commemoration and Dignity of the Victims of the Crime of Genocide and of the Prevention of this Crime. In 2025, the UN General Assembly unanimously adopted Armenia’s resolution titled ‘Decade of the International Day of Commemoration and Dignity of the Victims of the Crime of Genocide and of the Prevention of this Crime.’ In March 2026, during the 61st session of the UN Human Rights Council, Armenia’s ‘Prevention of Genocide’ resolution was once again unanimously adopted.
Remembering the past and honoring the innocent victims of the Armenian Genocide, the Republic of Armenia is building its sovereign future on a peace agenda. Good-neighborly relations and genuine cooperation between neighboring states are the minimum conditions necessary to establish lasting peace in the South Caucasus and ensure peaceful coexistence for all peoples of the region,” the statement said.
