Armenia raises resilience issues at UN

The Permanent Mission of Armenia to the United Nations, together with partners, held a roundtable titled “Resilience, biodiversity and partnerships: SIDS on the road to COP17.”

Marking the International Day of Small Island Developing States, Armenia’s mission worked with the Permanent Mission of Palau (chair of AOSIS), the Office of the High Representative for Least Developed Countries, Landlocked Developing Countries and SIDS, the United Nations Development Programme, the United Nations Environment Programme and UNESCO.

The event gathered representatives of SIDS, partner countries, UN entities and other stakeholders to underline both the specific challenges and contributions of these states, especially in tackling climate change, biodiversity loss and ensuring ocean sustainability.

Discussions focused on strengthening resilience, expanding financing opportunities, promoting nature-based solutions and advancing cooperation to support implementation of the Kunming–Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework.

Participants stressed the need to fully reflect SIDS priorities during preparations for COP17 in Armenia, including through practical, action-oriented approaches to biodiversity financing and implementation.

The roundtable also highlighted the need for continued global solidarity and coordinated efforts to address structural vulnerabilities, while recognizing the role of these countries in promoting sustainable and climate-resilient development.
