Pashinyan sets water reforms as key priority

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan stated that addressing water sector problems will be a priority for the government over the next five years, speaking during a meeting with residents of Vardenik in the Martuni community.

He noted that there is no settlement in Armenia without water-related issues, according to Armenpress.

“Over the next five years, water issues will be among our top priorities. To give you an idea of how important this is, just as peace was one of our main priorities over the past five years, water will be one of the key priorities in the next five.

The most troubling fact for me is that there is not a single settlement in the country without water-related problems. The good news is that we have water resources in our highland country, but we must be able to collect and manage them properly. We also need to change the way we irrigate fields and gardens. There are water-saving technologies available, and we will support our farmers in all these matters,” the prime minister said.

He added that in some settlements, residents use drinking water for irrigation, which leads to shortages of potable water.

“There must be both drinking and irrigation water everywhere, because if one is missing, the problem is not solved. If there is drinking water but no irrigation water, people will use drinking water for irrigation, and then there will not be enough for drinking. It’s very simple logic,” Pashinyan stressed.
