Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said he is confident Armenia will have a new stadium ready by the 2029 FIFA U-20 World Cup, which the country will co-host with Georgia.
“I was somewhat concerned, but now I am convinced everything is realistic, and we will have a stadium by the start of the tournament,” he said during a government meeting, Aysor.am reports.
Education, Science, Culture and Sports Minister Zhanna Andreasyan stated that more than 100,000 fans are expected to visit Armenia, and around 30 matches will be held in the country.
“In essence, after the senior World Cup, this is the second most significant event. We expect more than 100,000 fans during those days. The plan is currently preliminary, and some changes are possible,” she said, according to Radar Armenia.
She added that up to 20 matches will take place in Yerevan, while up to 10 games will be hosted in Vanadzor and Ijevan.
“Most likely, we are talking about September–October 2029,” Andreasyan said.
Armenia and Georgia will jointly host the FIFA Youth World Cup in 2029. The joint bid was selected as the winner during a FIFA Executive Committee meeting held in Vancouver.
