Azerbaijan’s Foreign Ministry summoned and handed a note of protest to EU Ambassador Mariana Koiunjic over the resolution adopted on April 30 by the European Parliament, which Baku claims contains “unfounded and biased formulations,” APA reported.
According to the Azerbaijani side, the provisions in the document “distort reality, contradict principles of objectivity, and violate obligations to respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of states.”
It was also stated that claims in the resolution regarding the return of Armenians to the Karabakh region are “completely unfounded,” and such calls are viewed as interference in Azerbaijan’s internal affairs.
The Foreign Ministry added that in 2023, in line with Azerbaijan’s constitution, a reintegration plan had been presented, and residents of Armenian origin left the region voluntarily, while statements suggesting otherwise “do not reflect reality.”
Baku also described calls for the release of Armenian detainees as unacceptable.
Claims regarding the destruction of cultural and religious heritage were likewise rejected as “entirely unfounded and unacceptable.”
The European Parliament resolution condemns Azerbaijan’s detention of Armenian prisoners of war and hostages, calling for their immediate and unconditional release. It also reaffirms support for the rights of Armenians from Nagorno-Karabakh, including protection of identity and property, and calls for ensuring their safe, unimpeded, and dignified return under international guarantees, as well as accountability for the destruction of Armenian cultural and religious heritage and the launch of an international assessment mission.
