Macron vows mediation on detainee issue

French President Emmanuel Macron, speaking in Yerevan, said in response to a journalist’s question that he would discuss the issue of Armenian detainees held in Baku with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev.

He noted that the topic would also be addressed in detail during talks with Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, News.am reports.

“Immediately after this trip, I will have another discussion with President Aliyev. You know that we always try to play our role in mediating and helping. I believe in respect for international law, and I am very pleased that in recent months there has been a reduction in tensions and a new phase has begun. I think it is very important to support this new phase of peace and stability. So we must do everything we can to improve the situation,” Macron said.

On May 4, Yerevan hosted the 8th summit of the European Political Community, to be followed on May 5 by the first Armenia–European Union summit. Around 50 high-level delegations arrived in Armenia, including European Council President António Costa and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. French President Emmanuel Macron also arrived in Yerevan, while Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky visited Armenia for the first time.
