The European Political Community summit held in Yerevan is historic for several reasons, European Council President António Costa said in his remarks.
According to him, the summit was made possible thanks to the agreement reached between Armenia and Azerbaijan, Factor.am reports.
He added that this agreement has also contributed to improved relations between Armenia and Turkey.
“Today’s European Political Community summit is truly historic because it is the first time the EPC meets here in the South Caucasus, placing Armenia at the heart of Europe, exactly where it belongs.
This summit has been made possible thanks to the agreement between Armenia and Azerbaijan, which is a story of peace for Europe. It is thanks to this agreement that relations between Armenia and Turkey have improved, and that this region has embarked on a path of transformation.”
He emphasized that interconnected strategic industries, markets, transport corridors, digital networks, and energy links are more than just economic elements—they build trust, create jobs, and enable practical partnerships and shared growth among neighbors.
The European Union, he said, is ready to become a reliable partner to turn this vision into reality, ensuring that this moment becomes irreversible in terms of peace, opportunity, and prosperity.
“It is vital to strengthen Armenia’s democracy and to fight external influence and disinformation. The future of Armenian democracy lies solely in the hands of Armenia’s citizens,” Costa stressed.
French President Emmanuel Macron stated that Armenia was perceived differently by the international community years ago, noting that “eight years ago, no one would have come to Armenia,” Aysor.am reports.
“Eight years ago, this country was seen by many as a de facto satellite of Russia. Nikol organized a velvet revolution and decided to de-risk the country,” he said.
According to Macron, Armenia has benefited from these developments.
On May 4, Yerevan hosted the 8th summit of the European Political Community, to be followed on May 5 by the first Armenia–European Union summit. Around 50 high-level delegations arrived in Armenia, including European Council President António Costa and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. French President Emmanuel Macron also arrived in Yerevan, while Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky visited Armenia for the first time.
