Armenia eyes energy independence with EU support

The European Union has expressed readiness to support the development of energy storage facilities in Armenia within the framework of energy cooperation.

Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, speaking alongside European Council President Antonio Costa and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, said the sides have outlined major joint projects combining Armenia’s resources with EU technological capabilities, according to 1lurer.am .

“Here, by the way, historic changes have taken place for Armenia. Historically, Armenia has been considered a country with limited energy resources and therefore classified among energy-dependent states. But in modern times, it has become clear that Armenia has virtually unlimited energy resources, because we have regions with more than 300 sunny days a year. This means there are vast opportunities for solar energy development. What we lack are storage facilities, and I thank our EU partners for their readiness to support their development in Armenia,” he said.

According to Pashinyan, discussions are also underway on other storage technologies, including systems based on daytime water accumulation and nighttime use. Work is also being carried out with the EU on developing green hydrogen production technologies and other areas.

“Strategically, we are confident that with the right architecture, Armenia can become not only energy self-sufficient but also further develop its energy export potential,” he said.

Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan hosted European Council President Antonio Costa and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen at the presidential residence as part of the Armenia–EU summit.

The visit included an official welcoming ceremony, followed by private and expanded-format meetings.
