Armenia removes age limit for public officials

Public officials in Armenia who previously had to leave their positions upon turning 65 will now be allowed to continue working under new legislative amendments.

Deputy Minister of Labor and Social Affairs Lusine Kocharyan announced the changes in parliament while presenting amendments to the Law on Civil Service, according to Sputnik Armenia.

She said the proposed reforms remove the maximum age limit of 65 for holding public office.

Kocharyan recalled that amendments adopted in May 2023 to the Labor Code had already eliminated age as grounds for terminating employment contracts, making it impossible to end employment solely due to age.

However, she noted that various laws still contained provisions imposing age limits on public servants, creating inconsistencies in the system.

“With these changes, we establish that employment relationships can be terminated only based on professional abilities, performance, and results,” Kocharyan said.

She added that after the amendments come into force, individuals aged 65 and older will no longer be hired under fixed-term or civil contracts, and employment must instead be formalized through open-ended agreements.

The deputy minister also said oversight in this area will be strengthened in cooperation with the Labor Inspectorate.

According to her, the changes will take effect three months after adoption by parliament and are expected to benefit around 24,400 people.
